All that glitters…

People would kill to have Faye Adelheim’s life. She lives in an ultra-swanky apartment in the most exclusive area of Stockholm, she has a gorgeous husband who gives her everything she’s ever wanted, and she has an adorable daughter who lights up her world. Faye’s life is perfect.

So how is it, then, that she now finds herself in a police station?

The truth is that Faye’s life is far from what it seems. The truth is that Faye isn’t even her real name. And now she’s been caught out. There’s no way she’s going to go down without a fight. The only question is – who will escape with their life?

Review:

‘Was she happy with her life? Was there anything she felt passionate about? Faye couldn’t be bothered to play any more games. They were both trapped in gilded cages. Like a couple of peacocks.’

The Gilded Cage is a 2020 Harper Collins publication, translated from Swedish by Neil Smith, by global crime sensation Camilla Lackberg. In her eleventh novel, which is a standalone, Lackberg opens her novel with a hooking and perplexing opening crime scene. The resulting plotline unravels as a cutthroat domestic noir story, that delves into the limits of human psyche. Following a complex and largely unlikeable lead named Faye, the reader is submerged in a desperate tale of lies, betrayal, revenge, fraud, relationship dysfunction, power struggles, sex and obsession.  Ultimately, The Gilded Cage is a story of the battle for justice and one determined woman’s fight to overcome the misogyny that exists in her life. Told via a then and now style format, comprising of three parts, this fast moving novel had me turning the pages at breakneck speed to get to the root of this unbelievable fight for emancipation. Despite my inability to draw any appeal from the characters, I appreciated the intentions of this stylish crime mystery novel. The Gilded Cage takes a closer a look behind the distorted fragments of a carefully staged and seemingly perfect life, which is debunked as the novel meets its explosive end point.

The Gilded Cage by Camilla Lackberg will be published on 23rd March 2020 by Harper Collins Details on how to purchase the book can be found here.
