Book Broadcast is a post I have created to help ease the load of the books I have for review. It is a great way to spread the word, providing recognition to an author or publisher for sending me a book to review. As my reviewing and blogging duties have stepped up a notch in the last year, I don’t often have the time to complete an in depth review. ‘Darkly glittering gem of a thriller’. I’m going to steal this description as I feel it perfectly encapsulates Something in the Water, the murky debut novel by Catherine Steadman. A few factors, like many readers and reviewers before me have indicated propelled me towards Something in the Water. For me, it was a combination of factors that influenced me to purchase this book and select it for my book club. Firstly, Something in the Water has received plenty of media attention through the endorsement of Reese Witherspoon’s book club. Secondly, it is penned by a first time writer who was an actress on one of my favourite television series, Downton Abbey. Finally, it features of the most explosive opening scenes I have read this year! It is probably best that I do not impart much by way of the plot, as this would ruin your reading experience. Suffice to say, Something in the Water is about a loving couple, that while holidaying in Bora Bora, discover something quite life changing in the water. The decision the couple make that day has far reaching implications for the rest of their lives. This decision provides plenty of moral ground for the reader to ponder on, as Mark and Erin discover the fallout from the choices they make on this ill fated holiday. The pathway this couple takes offers up plenty of book club related discussion, therefore, I do think this is exactly the right fit for book clubs. With the added angle of Erin’s work as a documentary maker and ties to a prison, further intrigue is added to this twisty tale. While the first half of the novel was stronger than the second half and I did have a couple of unanswered questions related to the plot, I did find great entertainment value in this piece of psychological based crime fiction. Debut writer Catherine Steadman has a promising career as a novelist to look forward to based on her first offering.
