Book Broadcast: The Favourite Sister by Jessica Knoll

Book Broadcast is a post I have created to help ease the load of the books I have for review. It is a great way to spread the word, providing recognition to an author or publisher for sending me a book to review. As my reviewing and blogging duties have stepped up a notch in the last year, I don’t often have the time to complete an in depth review. I hope you can discover some new titles to read through this regular book post.

About The Favourite Sister:

From the author of the bestselling debut novel of 2015 Luckiest Girl Alive comes Jessica Knoll’s new thriller, featuring a pair of competitive and uber-successful sisters whose secrets and lies result in murder.

Brett and Kelly Courtney are the shining jewels in a New York-based reality TV show called Goal Diggers. One of the most popular shows on American national television, its fiercely competitive cast of five self-made women are defined by their success, beauty and ruthless drive to reach the top by whatever means necessary.

The Courtney sisters’ rivalry goes skin deep despite the blossoming business they have built together that helps disadvantaged women in Morocco. Harbouring bitter jealousies and dark secrets about their manufactured screen lives they’re joined by three other hyper-competitive women who all have their own agendas. And the latest season promises sparks to fly in the quest for even higher ratings.

Vicious backstabbing, scathing social media attacks and finely-tuned scripting draw in the viewing public every week, all orchestrated by the show’s omnipotent producers. But even they don’t know that season 4 will end in murder…

It was with some trepidation that I went into reading The Favourite Sister, the second novel by author Jessica Knoll. Knoll’s very popular debut novel, released in 2015, The Luckiest Girl Alive, was a did not finish book for me. However, I was keen to give Knoll another chance, especially when I learnt that her novel has been picked up for screen rights by Reece Witherspoon’s production company. So, I tried to go into my reading of The Favourite Sister with an open and objective mind. Sadly, my attempts to enjoy this book were unsuccessful. I ended up committing a terrible bookworm sin, I skimmed the novel. I found that I didn’t care at all about the characters, or their fate.

I have a feeling that my response to this book may not be shared by others. It may have just been my reading mood this week, or based on my disconnection to both of Knoll’s books now, I may have a reading clash with her style of writing. So, I will encourage those with an interest in the nitty gritty of reality television shows, contemporary storylines and those who value dark comedic undertones to their novels, do try this one for yourself, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Whilst I didn’t appreciate this book, it has received positive reviews from others. If you are interested in reading this title, check out a review written by one of my own favourite fellow bloggers, Debbish.

The Favourite Sister by Jessica Knoll was published on 29th May 2018 by Pan Macmillan. Details on how to purchase the book can be found here.
